Best Blinds for Conservatory Heat

A conservatory that hits the high 30s in July and freezes in January is a shading problem, not a lost cause. Here is how to choose blinds that fix the heat — and where most people spend their money in the wrong place.

Why conservatories overheat

A conservatory is essentially a room made of glass, and glass is a one-way valve for heat. Sunlight pours in through the roof, warms everything inside, and that heat then struggles to escape — the greenhouse effect, working against you.

The key insight is that most of the heat and glare arrives through the roof, not the sides. That single fact should shape every shading decision you make.

Start with the roof

If you only shade one thing, shade the roof. Roof blinds intercept the sun where it is strongest — coming straight down through the glass — and stop that heat before it enters the room.

Side blinds still have a place: they add privacy, take the low evening sun off your eyes and finish the look. But fitting side blinds alone and expecting a cooler room is the most common and most expensive mistake people make.

The best fabrics for heat

Look for solar-reflective fabrics — pleated or cellular styles with a metallised backing. The reflective layer bounces a large share of the sun's radiant heat back out through the glass before it can build up inside.

Cellular (honeycomb) fabrics have a clever second benefit. The air trapped in their cells insulates the glass, so in winter they slow the heat escaping from the room. One set of blinds then works in both directions: cooler in summer, warmer in winter.

Should you motorise?

Conservatory roof blinds are high and awkward to reach, which is why most people automate them. A solar-powered motor is the tidiest option — no cables run across the glazing bars, and the panel charges happily under a glass roof.

Where a power supply already sits nearby, a mains motor is an alternative. Either way, motorising lets a whole roof of blinds open and close together at the press of a button.

Get the roof shaded with the right reflective fabric and a conservatory stops being a two-month room. Motorise it, and the whole thing runs itself.
